Lemon Meringue Pie with Bintang Radler

Beers are easy to be found, especially at the convenient store nearby. Many of them have not-so-indistinguishable taste so until now I don't have any particular favorite one. Then, I saw the new product from Bintang, Bintang Radler. It caught my eye and looks so refreshing.
Started with the curiosity about Bintang Radler, I was tempted to buy and taste it. The flavour is good indeed. The freshness of the lemon inspired and triggered an idea in my head. I tried to add Bintang Radler flavor into my favorite homemade Lemon Meringue Pie.
It is surprisingly turns out a good match with the Lemon Meringue Pie. The sweet and sour of lemon  from Bintang  Radler adds the richness of taste to a simple pie. The beer flavour that strikes later makes it different with other ordinary lemon pies. I love the appealing and unique taste in every bite of it.
Here is the recipe of Lemon Meringue Pie with Bintang Radler :

Morning Tummy Treat at Kopi Luwak, Kuningan City

When weekend is coming and everybody yelling “Thank God!!” , I also do the same thing. Yeah, why not? Who doesn’t love weekend? I started up my day with waking up late and feel like sleepy but I need to boost my energy and give some treats to my tummy.

Then I went to Kuningan City and I stopped at Kopi Luwak to get some booster. Kopi Luwak is located at the Upper Ground Floor. It was the first time I went there, and the impression’s good. The place is comfortable and I chose the nice place near the window, with the light shining on me through the glass window. The interior is pretty, warm and cozy to have some meeting or chitchat with friends and also to enjoy the dish.

Honestly I am not a coffee freak, but I can enjoy drinking coffee. That day, I was craving for a fresh and light beverage so I chose to order Matcha Mambo, a green tea with ice cream on top. When the drink was coming, I was so happy because it looked like the same as in the menu .The taste’s also good for me, not too sweet, not to creamy, fresh and exactly what I expect for Matcha Mambo.

Actually I can’t eat something big for what I call a breakfast, so I chose Golden pouch to accompany Matcha Mambo. Golden pouch is a shrimp wrapped with wonton wrapper and deep fried a few times until it looks golden brown.

I started picking each golden pouch and dipping it to the sauces. It’s served with vegetables (carrot, corn and green peas) , dipping sauces (tomato and chili sauce), French fries and garnish. The inside is so tasty, soft and delicious and the wrapper is sooo crunchy, totally what I expect and I love it.

I was so satisfied for both of my dish. Hopefully I will be back to Kopi Luwak and order other menus, their famous coffees and other dishes.

WEEKEND’S ESCAPING TIME : MOUNT PAPANDAYAN

“The first experience is not always sweet, but surely memorable.”

Well, it refers to my mount climbing trip on last September. Mount Papandayan was chosen as it is a ‘friendly’ one to the first timer like us. Besides, it is easy to reach from Jakarta and doesn’t cost much.

The cold night wind stroke our faces as we went out from the bus. It was around 12 a.m on Saturday at that time. Some stalls were still open though the visitors were only in a few. We went there to rest for a while. A glass of warm and sweet tea would be a good starter, we thought.

More climbers arrived. We joined them for renting a vehicle so it was cheaper. We rode a car named Kolbak. It was overloaded with passengers that I couldn’t even move at all after sitting. Then, we switched to a pick up after reaching the gateway. It was a hell of ride on the damaged road in the midst of dark and freezing 2 a.m air. Our pick-up even went backwards twice! Half an hour later we relieved a deep sigh at Camp David, the climbing starting post. We met a lovely couple, kak Fariz and Ayu, and agreed for being a neighbor tent-mate later at the top camp site. The awful ride was soon forgotten after playing guitar and singing with another group near the campfire.

The Crater of Papandayan

We left at dawn after repacking all the stuffs. Not far from the starting point, we stopped by to enjoy the moment when the early light of the sun was rising. The road was rocky and full of pebble but easy to walk. The trip to the crater was supposed to be short, but we spent lots of time to make pictures and leisuring. Later we smelled the sting smell of sulfur and reached the crater. It was releasing the thin smoke when we passed through. Then, we decided to having the breakfast while enjoying the view.

On the way to the crater

A climber amongst the rocky path beside the crater. Gosh, looking at this, suddenly a thought came by,
"Who are you, to be such an arrogant fool in this big vast world?"
I am reminded how small the human is compared to the universe, His creation.

Just keep walking!

The sulfur smoke from the crater

The Second Checkpoint

The track to the second post varies from wide to pathway, rocky to sandy, flat, uphill and sometimes steep. The views are more picturesque too and greener than the crater. The wind was chill on that nice day, but we sweat a lot. We stopped several times when the backpack and tent felt heavier than we could handle. We passed a small stream of river and queued at the steep pathway too. Then, we reached the second post and reported for camping at Pondok Saladah.

We continued our trip to the camp and built our first tent with the help of our neighbor tent-mate! It was fun! We were excited like children. Haha. The camp was so crowded at the weekend. Well, I expected quieter surroundings, actually.

A picture before continuing to second post, hehe

Not a kind of my everyday's view while eating breakfast, how nice it is !

Not far after passing the crater, the view started to look more greener.

An uphill pathway

A sign at the second post. We camped at Pondok Saladah.

The Death Forest and Tegal Alun

We took a nap after lunch and then left to The Death Forest. The dark, dry and dead trees made  an enchanting scenery when we strolled amongst them. Continuing our climb, there was a big challenge just before Tegal Alun, called Tanjakan Abang. It's a long steep and the most tiring one as far as we went through. Supporting each other with other fellow climbers, we finally made it and Voila! the wide Edelweiss field welcomed us. It was so beautiful that I hardly resist the temptation to pick them. I could say this place marked our final accomplish as we were too tired to see the sunrise the next day.

It was almost dark when we reached our tent at Pondok Salada. The campfires started to be seen all over the place. We cooked and ate together with our new friends beside the campfire. Then, I just laying down inside my sleeping bag, staying silent and listening to the music from my cell phone. There was no signal so it was like being isolated with the outside world for two days, forgetting the hustle and bustle of Jakarta’s crowd. Unfortunately, the camp was busy until morning and it was freaking cold, so I hardly slept.

Our campfire

Despite the awful ride, harsh temperature, and noisy atmosphere at the camp, it was so fun. We are looking forward to another climb. Hmm, what mount do you think should be next?

Here is the trip details:

  • Jakarta to Garut Terminal by Primajasa from Cililitan Terminal ( one way ) = Rp 42.000
  • Garut Terminal to Papandayan Gateway using Kolbak ( one way ) = Rp 15.000/ person
  • Gateway to Camp David using pick-up ( one way )  = Rp 20.000/person
  • First checkpoint is at Camp David
  • You have to reconfirm if you are going to camp at the second post
  • When you were back, make sure to bring all your own garbage, or you can’t leave the post
  • Bring a masker or towel and make it wet if you can’t hold the sting smell of sulfur when passing the crater
  • I was surprised I couldn’t find any insect at all so I think the insect repellent might not be a-must-bring-list
  • If you prefer the quiet atmosphere at the camp, come on weekdays.

One Fine Day in Malacca

Last September thankfully I got a short trip with my family to Malaysia. It was supposed to be Dad's medical check up by the way, but Mom's birthday was also around those days, so she decided to take this chance to gather. We are rarely in a full team since my bro and I left home at 15. We left at Wednesday 24 and took a night flight to Kuala Lumpur. Dad got his check up at Thursday.

The next day, my brother skipped work and brought us to Malacca. It just spent two hours drive by bus from KL. The bus was comfortable and spacious, making the trip didn't seem long. We arrived at noon and took a taxi to the guesthouse. We stayed at Zheng He Tea House at Kg Kuli Street, near Jonker Walk. This place is recommended! It offers convenient and spacious room with affordable price.

We looked for lunch as soon as finished putting our luggage. We headed to the famous Famosa Chicken Rice Ball restaurant. It is indeed must be in the must-visited-list. The foods are delicious and its interior are nice. My family did the order stuff while I walked around the restaurant to sightseeing. I met few visitors who also couldn't resist to take some pictures of the interior. Not long after that, the food was served. I stole a moment when they were started picking the food ( they didn't spare a time for instagram or blog food porn things like that, lol ). We ordered roasted pork, BBQ Pork, Rice Ball, Fish Ball, and a plate of Pak Choi ( the vegetable ). Hmm, yummy!

The front interior of Famosa restaurant. It was crowded during lunch time.

A moment I stole while they started eating.

Then, we took a walk around. We visited Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum. The museum was great but unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take a picture. After that, we went to Christ Church of Malaka. The building has a red distinctive color. Many tourists are touring around with full decorated  becak or old bikes. Next place we visited was the ruin of St.Paul Church. There was a street musician cheering up the atmosphere. Then, we went to A Famosa, a Portuguese fortress and Sultan Palace nearby.

Time flew fast. We were back to the guesthouse and took a rest before dinner. Weekend is the best time when it comes to visit Malacca, because the night market at Jonker Street/Jonker Walk is just available during that time. The street was filled by pedestrians. My Goodness! I was so happy seeing bunch of local street foods. Even after having a dinner, my tummy still found some places for them, haha!

Kuih Lobak ( Radish Cake )

Ahh, I forgot the name of this cookies

Street Dimsum, RM6 for 10 pieces. Ah, I was full of them!

Well then, the trip was really short but memorable to me since I enjoyed it with beloved ones. Malacca itself has captured my heart with its oldies atmosphere and stuff. Oh, plus its delicious foods too! Slurrrrp!

Debut on Magazine

Every child dreams a lot. I found out some are just simple ones as I recall mine. I remember how I spent time admiring beautiful pictures on magazines, wondering if mine could be there someday. Finally, the chance's coming ! My first travel article was published on August edition of Lionmag, inflight magazine of Lion Air. It is about Belitung island at the eastern Sumatra, Indonesia. Actually, I enjoy creating photographs much more than writing. I have trouble with words but now it's time to deal with it, right? I also want to say thank you to the editor for fixing my writing, haha.

The original article is in Indonesian language, but I also try to translate it to English. You just need to keep scrolling down if you don't read Bahasa. I apologize for any grammatical mistakes there. Lastly, don't expect, just enjoy reading!

SISI LAIN BELITUNG

Berkunjung ke Belitung rasanya kurang lengkap jika tak menyinggahi Rumah Adat Belitung. Beragam kebudayaan serta adat masyarakat setempat pun bisa ditemukan di sana.

Teks & Foto by Dian Permatasari

Hidangan ala Negeri Timah

OTHER SIDES OF BELITUNG

Coming to Belitung is not complete without visiting Rumah Adat belitung ( The Traditional House of Belitung). Various local culture and custom can be found there.

Text & Pictures by Dian Permatasari

Belitung and its beautiful beaches have been a strong image in people's mind. Yet, it is not complete visiting Belitung without exploring other sides of Belitung, such as peeking into its unique culture and tasting its distinguishing culinary. To know more about Belitung, I tried to "act" like local people.

The first destination is Rumah Adat Belitung ( The Traditional House of Belitung) that located in Tanjungpandan City, near The Regent Office of Belitung Regency. The building is brown, dominated by woods and surrounded by greenish yard, which makes it look shady from afar. The open hours is from from 08.00-12.00 and 14.00-16.00 o'clock everyday, except for Sunday which is only from 08.00-12.00 o'clock.

Officially opened in 2009, the building is a reconstruction of traditional house which was used to inhabited by locals. Nowadays, there is no real traditional house left, swept by the modernization.

The sun looked so excited that morning. I rushed to the terrace through the stairs, took off my shoes and put it on the available storage. All visitors has to do this due to the maintenance purpose. The chilly atmosphere touched my skin when I entered its wide main room. The big windows were side by side, letting the sun light and the breeze entered freely. The wood wall was still well polished and the floor was covered by straw mats.

There was a living room with its furniture on the left side. Meanwhile, on the right side, there was a replica of Belitung-Malayan style bedroom and traditional bridegroom costume . The visitors are able to wear it and taking pictures there.

From the main room, there was loss, an open room which led me to the big kitchen at the backside. Not only kitchen tools, there were also farming equipments and traditional musical instruments neatly displayed. My eyes was caught by gambus, a wood instrument which shape like ukulele with the tuning head that carved into a deer head. Deer is the mascot of Bangka Belitung province. Its beautiful strum is always heard on the traditional ceremonies and dances. Overall, getting around this traditional house gave me a brief insight to know more about the cultural side of Belitung.

The Dishes of tin-mining country

After a small tour around the traditional house, my stomach was starting to growl. I asked for an officer recommendation about a local restaurant before leaving. He suggested to go to Belitong Timpo Duluk Restaurant ( Old Belitung Restaurant ) which is located at Mat Daud Street, Kampung Parit, Tanjungpandan.

When I arrived, I directly understood the restaurant name means. Again, the traditional atmosphere welcomed me. A yellow dim light filled the room. The old pictures and various equipments decorated the wall and brought me to Belitong in the past. I sat near the window. The sound of water flowing down from a jug was heard clearly. The straw mat was tucked under the table mirror. A waitress with Belitung-patterned apron came. I ordered some famous local dishes.

After a while, the dishes were ready. The first dish was Gangan Kelapak Mude, a spicy fish soup with tumeric. Among many kind of fishes for Gangan, ketarap fish is the most popular because of its soft texture. At this restaurant, Gangan is served in the coconut shell as the substitute of bowl. The mixture of tumeric ingredients and the sour taste from pineapple slices bring out the freshness of the fish. It is a perfect dish to be eaten with a bowl of warm rice.

The next dish was Ikan Bungkus Simpor, a seasoned-roasted fish wrapped in Simpor leaves, which is the distinguishing plant of Belitung. Menu lain ada ikan bungkus simpor, ikan bakar berbumbu resep tradisional, dibungkus dengan daun pohon simpor yang merupakan ciri khas daerah ini. And the other dish was Berego, a dish made of rice flour which was eaten with coconut milk and minced fish. The shape is like big flat noodle. Lastly, do not miss the freshness of Belitung citrus ice.

If coming in a group, you can try Dulang Set menu. Dulang Set is adapted from Makan Bedulang, an eating-together-tradition of Belitung people in a traditional celebration. A Dulang Set portion is for 4 people. Various dishes is served in a big tray. The menu choices varies according to the restaurant.

After the stomach was full of tasty food, I decided to relax at Tanjung Pendam beach which is located near the city. It is always full of tourists and locals. Seemed like all came to enjoy the lovely sunset there. And yeah, the golden light above that afternoon horizon succeed to end the day beautifully. *
